Native-speed editing with collaboration built in

We used Zed daily for several weeks across Rust and TypeScript projects. It is the fastest general-purpose editor we have tested, with genuinely real-time collaboration; the cost is a smaller extension ecosystem and later platform parity.

Setup took minutes and the first impressions are dominated by raw responsiveness: scrolling, search, and LSP completions all feel instant even in large repositories. The Rust-analyzer integration is the smoothest we have used in any editor.

Collaboration is the differentiator. Joining a session feels like sharing a native application rather than a browser screen share; latency is imperceptible on normal connections. For pair work this alone justifies a look.

The honest costs: extension coverage still trails VS Code by a wide margin, and some niches (specific debuggers, niche language toolchains) require waiting or workaround. Linux support matured noticeably later than macOS.

Verdict: For performance-sensitive developers and teams that pair-program heavily, Zed is a first-rate choice today. If your workflow depends on a long tail of extensions, evaluate against VS Code before switching.

Daily driver for a year, mostly Rust and TypeScript. Startup is instant, collaboration feels like a shared native app rather than a browser session, and the Rust-analyzer integration is the smoothest I have used. Extension coverage still trails VS Code, and Linux support matured later than macOS — both worth knowing going in.
